Brexit Impact

Prior to the UK's departure from the EU, Seiont Nurseries exported approximately 18% of their total production value to seven European countries, with substantial trade flowing to the Republic of Ireland and Northern

Ireland.

However, Brexit-related border friction and additional costs severely
impacted this trade, reducing orders from Irish customers to just two in the past four years.

The breakthrough came through Seiont's partnership with Hannon Transport: This partnership has revolutionised our export process by removing traditional barriers for Irish customers.

Innovation

Using an innovative transport solution, Seiont Nurseries, a leading Welsh wholesale young-plant producer, has successfully re-established its European export market through a

collaboration with Hannon Transport, supported by Farming Connect’s horticultural business development initiatives.

The partnership has created a streamlined export process that enables Irish nurseries to access  Welsh horticultural products with unprecedented ease, marking a significant  recovery from post-Brexit trade disruptions.

Leveraging a unique transport solution
reduces Brexit impact

Prior to the UK's departure from the EU, Seiont Nurseries  exported approximately 18% of their total production value to seven European countries, with substantial trade flowing to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

However, Brexit-related border friction and additional costs severely impacted this trade,
reducing orders from Irish customers to just two in the past four years.

The breakthrough came through Seiont's partnership with Hannon Transport, which has revolutionised the export process by removing traditional barriers for Irish customers.

Solution

"We’ve been delighted to support Neil’s work in increasing exports, this helps us all overcome post-Brexit challenges in Wales" Sarah Gould - Farming Connect.

This solution maintains Seiont's commitment to accessibility, preserving their “no-minimum-order” policy and enabling shipments as small as a single Danish trolley containing

approximately 640 plants across up to 32 varieties.

To ensure competitive pricing, transport and customs charges are passed through at cost without markup, while Irish customers benefit from trolley discounts of  around €100 and invoicing in euros for simplified transactions.

Farming Connect's role in supporting this development reflects their broader mission to drive Welsh horticultural businesses forward through subsidised business advice and  comprehensive training programmes.

The Farming Connect training has strengthened our teams capabilities.

Neil Alcock, Managing Director of Seiont Nurseries, has acknowledged the unique value of Farming Connect's support in Wales, particularly their training initiatives that have strengthened his team's capabilities.

The partnership also advances sustainability goals, as Seiont Nurseries operates as an
exclusively peat-free producer, using kerbside recyclable pots for all plants. Irish customers now have renewed access to Seiont's speciality in new and innovative plant varieties sourced from international breeders and tested for climate suitability.

With sufficient capacity to meet increased demand and plans to restore same- week delivery as volumes grow, Seiont Nurseries is now "open for business" and ready to serve both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland customers.
